Each year we are asked to provide communications support for the LifeCycle Charity Bicycle Race benefiting the Heart of Hope Women’s Center in Shreveport, LA. This is one of our absolute favorite events, as we count it an honor and a privilege to be able to provide a public service for such a great cause.
We are stationed at designated rest stops along the race route and give reports of when racers pass each rest stop as well as any issues with bicycles or any medical emergencies that may arise. We have two – four mobile units that are roaming between rest stops looking for any issues. We will also have a final mobile unit that is following behind the last rider on the route, so we know where the end of the race is always located. We use the assist of APRS for these locations so that we can show the race coordinator where the last rider is in real-time.
Race operations are coordinated from the Heart of Hope center by a K5SAR Control operator, who is giving real-time updates to the race coordinator.
